The term green energy is a widely used one that encompasses many things more than just energy that is produced from those resources that are pollution free. Any product that does not harm the environment, any service which makes use of better technology to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and even the use of innovative techniques to reduce one’s consumption of energy all come under the all- encompassing term green energy.

When governments make use of large wind power plants and hydro-electric power plants to generate energy it is termed as green energy. However, generating green energy is not all about removing the need for fossil fuels. Hydro power plants depend on river water and dams which in turn destroys the low lying areas in the path of the river damaging the ecology of that area. Does this constitute as green energy? A little soul searching shall reveal that this simply cannot be branded as green energy because of the destruction caused to the environment.

Even nuclear energy is not clean as it is touted to be. The truly green energy solutions are those of solar, geothermal and wind energy that leave a lower environment destruction footprint. These sources are as clean as they can get. Solar powered devices make use of minimum amount of raw materials and wind power plants once set up last a really long time. The same applies to geothermal power plants and therefore they constitute clean green energy because their environment destruction footprint is minimal as opposed to current fuels.
